Lessons from the Hive
Charles Decker

In this short but significant read, you get to know an organization headed for a major transition with new leadership and new challenges.  The more experienced employees are not so onboard with changes and this book takes the reader through the experience of change through the eyes of a new employee who is being pulled in all directions by the various factions within the organization.  I found this useful but predictable and a little too exaggerated for the real life subtleties of folks having problems with the vision and objectives set for them.  Folks are not always “in your face” about their doubts and if they could be more like this book and lay it out for you to really deal with, that would be more helpful.  Easy read of barely 100 pages and you can knock it out on a short plane ride.

How to Turn Generation Me Into Active Members of Your Association
Cynthia D'Amour

Another fast read but definitely worthwhile.  You’ll read about the differences in generations which lead to our need to have different techniques to draw in and retain those valuable volunteer leaders we need so much in our chapter and PMI.  Cynthia speaks mostly to her research with generation “Me” which includes the current 25-30-somethings who are populating our work environments more and more.  As with any generation, these folks have their preferences and Cynthia attempts to get you to understand how to motivate and excite the volunteer spirit in them.  They are not averse to service but it has to be on their terms and with all the consideration of family as their top priority.  Again, you can knock this out with a short plan trip.

The POWER of Acknowledgement
Judith W. Umlas

Do you have a hard time accepting or giving praise?  Do you think there is a limit to the amount of praise you should give because then it will lose value?  Have I got the book for you!  This short read takes you through 7 principles to consider as you open your heart and mind to giving and accepting sincere praise.  You will find these ideas and techniques will make you more successful at work and at home.  The concepts are simple and yet, we don’t really spend enough time taking the benefits of giving our staff sincere praise into account enough until someone is walking out the door.  I would definitely recommend this one.

The Speed of Trust
Steven M. R. Covey

In a day and age of a vacancy of ethics and integrity in leadership, Stephen Covey, the son of famed “7 Habits” author Stephen Covey, takes us through an exploration of how we landed in a “no trust” zone as leaders and how we can and must escape.  He talks us through the merge of the Covey and Franklin organizations and all the crazy yammer that results when two companies merge and their cultures collide.  Careful leadership and communication are essential to navigate through the turmoil and come out stronger on the other side.  This is a longer read but well worth the several hundred pages.
