There are many ways to improve your professional knowledge and skills. One way is to increase your knowledge is by reading current and relevant project management books. We've created book clubs that are designed to be small discussion groups led by a facilitator.
It's an informal group meeting for a Saturday morning breakfast and discussion. One person serves as facilitator to guide and promote discussion. It is an excellent way to meet other chapter members and open a dialogue regarding trends and challenges experienced by those in project management roles.
The Deadline: A Novel about Project Management by Tom DeMarco
This is a project management novel that vividly illustrates the principles — and outright absurdities — that affect the productivity of a software development team. With his trademark wit set free in the novel format, DeMarco centers the plot around the development of six software projects. The teams are of different sizes and use different methods, and they compete against one another and against an impossible deadline.
Managing these teams — with the help of numerous consultants who come to his aid — Mr. Tompkins (the manager) tests the project management principles he has gathered over a lifetime. Each chapter closes with journal entries that make up the eye-opening approach to management illustrated in this engaging novel.
