Thinking Inside the Box

Topic:  Project management is not an academic set of definitions and flowcharts of processes.  It is the application of what we learn that makes us project managers.  Stakeholders and sponsors often ask for "outside the box" solutions.  But how can individuals skills in definitions and performing step-by-step tasks "think outside the box" or "color outside the lines" when systematic conformity, compliance measurements and attention to details are at the core of their mental sanity?

Changing how we think when we're inside the box of project management might produce more "outside the box" results.  Thinking is work and it isn't always easy.  Thinking doesn't always produce results but how we do it affects what that thinking produces.  Thinking takes time.  But do we place it in our day planner or project schedule?

How we manage projects reflects not only what we think about project management but also how we think about its methodologies.  Perhaps we should occasionally sit back and reflect on what might be "boxing" our thoughts.  Do you typically:

a) remain in the box and think about what is available to you in the box; or
b) remain in the box and think about what is not available to you outside the box; or
c) step out of the box and think about what is no longer available to you that's left in the box; or
d) step out of the box and think about what is not available to you outside the box; or
e) just close the box lid and not think about it anymore

Speaker:  Danny McDowell entered the field of software development when high speed was 1200 baud (that's about 120 characters per second) and a high end personal computer had 64K bytes of total memory.  Since then he has covered the software gamut from development, support, evaluation and sales.  Danny has taught at the junior college and university levels and in recent years been consulting and training in a corporate environment.

He became a PMI certified PMP in 2002 and is presently a Senior Project Manager for American Airlines Technology Services which supports flight attendant operations systems.  Danny's non-software related experience includes: co-author of business simulation courseware (the business game, 1985), a former Bedford city council member and a charter member of the FW PM Toastmasters club.

Danny and his wife, Rhonda, celebrated their silver anniversary this year and live in Granbury with their three teenagers.  Their home is located along the Brazos river where he wishes the deer would only play and not consider home landscaping as a buffet.
